ACADEMIC POWER HOUR

Academic Power Hour is academic time after school designed to improve students’ academic performance throughout the academic year. It is a time for study and homework completion. During Power Hour, students work independently, in small groups, or work with teachers who have volunteered their time to support students after school. All students participating in Power Hour must have a commitment to improving their academic performance. It is open to all students and mandated for any student participating in an afterschool activity, including athletic teams, community partnerships, and school-based clubs.

Academic Power Hour operates Monday through Thursday from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Students convene in the dining hall at 3:20 p.m. and eat snack before they are dismissed to work with teachers, study groups, mentors, or tutors.

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Special Education at Eastern Senior High School is a collaborative effort involving the student, family, school and community in developing an appropriate educational program which supports inclusionary practices and provides the opportunity for every student to maximize his or her potential and become a productive member of the community.

Eastern has been consistently recognized as one of the top Secondary Special Education (SPED) Programs in DCPS. We currently have three full-time programs for students with special needs that are diagnosed under the Autism Spectrum (2) and (1) ID Program. Students with disabilities also receive related services to include: Speech and Language, Social Emotional, Adaptive Physical Education, Occupational Therapy, Audiology and Assistive Technology.

The Eastern SPED population consists of students with varied disabilities to include: SLD, ID, ED, OHI, MD, SLI, and Autism. Additionally, many of our students compete in the Special Olympics, are involved in extra-curricular school activities, and are active in the community when possible.
